Trailside Nation Interview #4 with Lil’ Cub

Trailside Nation: Lil’ Cub, tells us who you are? (Name, age, and profession)
Lil’ Cub: My name is Alvin Blocker AKA: Lil’ Cub

Trailside Nation: Lil’ Cub, how did your interest in the outdoors get started?
Lil’ Cub: As a young lad growing up with my 3 younger brothers, we spent a lot of time outdoors.

Trailside Nation: Lil’ Cub, What is your dream adventure?
Lil’ Cub: To be able physically,, mentally and financially continue to hike into eternity.

Trailside Nation: What is the most memorable outdoor experience you have had so far?
Lil’ Cub: There are actually 2 that comes to mind immediately. First my youngest Brother aka ATGhost came on the trail to meet me in Marion, VA Northbound. 5 weeks of the best hiking I’ve ever done. And then conversation early in my hike with another early thru hiker. He shared a story I ask him about. I wanted to know what his most memorable moment so far? He replied that he had helped save a mans life from suicide who had kids and a wife at home. The thru hiker had met this guy on the trail somewhere. 4hrs later the guy went home.

Trailside Nation: What is your favorite outdoor brand?
Lil’ Cub: I would love to share this Brand of Osprey. Going up Apple Orchard on day my left shoulder strap gave out. It was an Osprey Aethier 65. This pack even though it can be a little overpacked if your not careful. However, this pack had seen trips on the FT and AT. A very comfortable and durable pack. I contacted Osprey and I was able to walk into the trail store and pick out a new pack. Returning my 10 year old pack for a newer lighter smaller pack. All at no charge.

Trailside Nation: Let us know what your top 5 must-have items to carry on a day hike?
Lil’ Cub: my top things are...Fully charged phone, 2lt water, small amount of snacks, poles and buff.

Trailside Nation: What is the next item that you want to purchase for your outdoor adventures?
Lil’ Cub: I am in the process of replacing all of my gear. My pack was removed from my property while I was away. I have replaced many pieces. I still need a tent. I miss my Big Agnus Copper Spur UL1.

Trailside Nation: Lil’ Cub, what are the social media accounts that people could follow, so they can see your outdoor adventures?
Lil’ Cub: People can follow me on Instagram @crestviewhiker

There’s a Reason They Call it “The Great Outdoors”

(Created by NewsUSA) –

The world has changed -; Wii has replaced “Wheeeee!” Tweeting is no longer for the birds, and Blackberries aren’t for picking on a warm summer afternoon. Kids today spend twice as much time indoors than their counterparts two decades ago.

But technology can be a great ally for families who want to spend more time in nature.

NatureFind, National Wildlife Federation’s (NWF) recently redesigned and re-launched online search tool, helps modern kids discover old-fashioned outdoor fun. NatureFind (www.nwf.org/naturefind) is a part of NWF’s Be Out There campaign, a mom-led movement to raise happier, healthier children with a lifelong appreciation for nature.

NatureFind users can search by city, state or zip code to access outdoor adventures nationwide, including nature activities and events, trails, aviaries, wildlife preserves, regional parks, zoos and campsites. With NatureFind, families get detailed information that will help them explore nature up to 500 miles away or right around the corner.

The next puddle-jumping excursion or fishing trip with grandpa is just a few clicks away. “NatureFind makes spending time outside easy for families,” says Rebecca Garland, Executive Director of NWF’s Be Out There campaign. “It puts the benefits of the great outdoors as close as your fingertips.”

The benefits of green time to children’s minds and bodies can be seen immediately by the experts -; their moms. “When we go outside, my kids become their best selves. Gone are the petty arguments about whose turn it is to go first or what to do next.

Suddenly the kids are creative, digging in the dirt, picking up worms, jumping and laughing,” says Be Out There mom Renee Limon, co-founder of EnviroMom.com and Portland mother of two girls, ages 5 and 7.

Each of the more than 9,200 locations and 30,000 events in the NatureFind database is accurately confirmed by a member of the NatureFind staff.

Hundreds of new locations and events are added daily.

To get started on your next family outdoor adventure, go to www.nwf.org/naturefind.
